The Basilica of Santa Croce is located in the Piazza di Santa Croce which is south east of El Duomo quite close to the river Arno.  It is the oldest Franciscan church in the world, building began in 1294 and it was consecrated in 1442. It is probably most famous for being the burial place of some of the most famous Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini. Due to this, it is also known as the Temple of the Italian Glories.
