This a shot taken directly underneath the main dome of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Del Fiore (El Dumo), showing the gorgeous artwork, as with everything like this, it does not do it any justice. The Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici decided to have the dome painted with a representation of The Last Judgment. This enormous work was started in 1568 by Giorgio Vasari, but most of the work was carried out by a lesser talented student, Federico Zuccari, it would take until 1579 to complete the work.
If you do go, get a guided tour with the roof walk included, you get a lot more inforation, access to extra areas and best of all, no long queues. The view from the top gallery is amazing with the way that the tiles are set on the floor.
